The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is investigating Clover after they recalled over 10,000 units of Go Nuts Peanut Butter due to high levels of aflatoxin, a toxin produced by mold on peanuts that can cause liver damage and cancer.
Aflatoxin Dangers:
Aflatoxins are a group of naturally occurring mycotoxins produced by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. These fungi can grow on various crops before harvest or during improper storage in warm, humid conditions. Aflatoxins are chemically stable and difficult to destroy, persisting through food processing methods like shelling, roasting, and even peanut butter production.
Health Risks:
Aflatoxin exposure is a serious health concern, particularly in developing countries where food regulations may be less stringent. Chronic exposure can lead to:
* Liver damage: Aflatoxins can interfere with liver function, causing inflammation and potentially liver failure.
* Increased risk of liver cancer: Aflatoxins are classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), meaning there is strong evidence for their cancer-causing potential in humans.
